Q&A with Christine Horton, Editor of Channel Pro

Christine Horton shares her views on mobile and the channel in this Q&A with the Countdown2MWC team.

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself and your magazine.

Channel Pro serves the needs of the IT resellers, VARS, systems integrators and distributor partners though up-to-the-minute news, in-depth reviews, industry opinion and analysis. The tone is business rather than techie. I am not a techie.

Q. What’s hot in mobile this year?

Device management platforms and fixed mobile convergence.

Q. What’s hot in the channel this year?

Virtualisation and of course, cloud computing.

Q. What’s your favourite blog?

I read Mike Simons’ blog on ComputerWorld UK and James Governor at RedMonk.

Q.What do you think is the most important development in mobile to date?

Android as a credible OS in the mobile space.

Q. How many events do you attend each year?

As many channel events as I can get to, particularly vendors’ partner conferences as it’s good to get the real story directly from the channel partners in attendance.

Q. Which one are you most looking forward to?

The Canalys Channels Forum is very good and relevant to us. Channel Pro is also involved in The London International Technology Show (LITS) at Excel in October.

Q. What types of stories or companies are likely to attract your attention this year?

Anything that’s of particular interest to the IT channel – we’re not so interested in product launches and technical specs, unless there’s a channel angle to it. This year I think we’ll hear a lot about how traditional equipment resellers are trying to make the transition to selling cloud services – and what that will entail for their business models.

Q. How many interviews do you do per week?

I might do two or three, but Will Garside, who writes news stories for Channel Pro, picks up the rest.

Q. What’s the best way to pitch a story to you? Email? Phone? Twitter? By post?

Email please!

Q. What is your favourite piece of technology?

My Virgin Media set top box. How did we ever live without clever telly?

Q. What is the best piece of advice for companies pitching stories?

Just to look at the site and understand the type of content we’re after. It sounds very simple but I still get pitches from vendors that only sell direct!

Q. What was the best press trip you’ve ever been on? Worst? Why?

I love to travel, and one of my favourite cities is San Francisco, which is great because so many companies have their partner events there! The best one though was probably an Alcatel trip to Charlotte, Philadelphia and New York in the late nineties. They had silly marketing budgets back then!

Q. What’s your favourite restaurant?

I love Wahaca, which does amazing fresh Mexican street food, and great margaritas! If budget’s not an issue, I had one of the best meals of my life at Hakkasan, and the restaurant is stunning.

Q. Are you a social media lover? Which ones are you on?

Channel Pro uses Twitter for its news stories, and I use LinkedIn for work contacts. Facebook is purely for friends, and people I don’t mind seeing me drunk.

Q. Tell us something no-one knows about you.

My God-like geniuses are Neil Finn and Aaron Sorkin.

The only claim to fame that springs to mind is a possible Grange Hill appearance in my youth.
