Major Wi-Fi havoc @ MWC11 not confined to Fira

February 15, 2011

Apparently HTC’s live demos hit, too
by Hans Cett (@HansCett)

It hasn’t been difficult to spot a trend developing amongst those attending the MWC 2011 show in the Fira (the exhibition grounds) it is obviously hard to obtain decent Wi-Fi access. prominent UK journalist, David Meyer [@superglaze] has tweeted that “Wi-Fi @ MWC11 continues to be a world of hurt.” he goes on to say, “I would say DIE WIFI DIE, but it’s already trying very hard to do just that.” But what’s this? According to Leila Makki [@LeilaMakki], the problems aren’t limited to the Fira – they are affecting the HTC press conference where live demos by the leading handset provider apparently failed. According to near- definitive guide to the MWC show from Unwired View here (see Countdown2MWC passim), the HTC press conference actually took place at the Teatre Lliure,  Plaça Margarida Xirgu. Somebody forgot to check the venue out properly, obviously. Anyway, if it helps Countdown2MWC previously published a list of the official Cisco sponsored Wi-Fi hotspots in the Fira here.

Oh, and guess who the major contributor to the Unwired View guide is? Step forward one Leila Makki.

  1. Oh look. David Meyer has just tweeted that, “Astonishingly, it occurred to someone to start up dedicated press Wi-Fi for the press room (was building-wide). We’re back online.” The power of the Press, eh?

  2. Meanwhile there’s a queue forming for wired ethernet connections in the media centre. The guys from Miliberty are doing a good job, but every seat with a connection is taken. Could Cisco drop in a few extra routers so those squatting on the floor can connect in?

    • Now if you had one of those new -fangled smartphones, Alan …. but then you don’t, do you? See Comments here
