Q&A with George Malim, Freelance Journalist and Editor of Vanilla Plus

January 20, 2011

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself:

I’ve covered the telecoms market since 1999 working as a reporter on CommunicationsWeek International and features editor of Telecommunications International before going freelance (by choice!) in 2001. Since then I’ve contributed to many telecoms media outlets reporting on the mobile internet explosion from its inception. In 1997, along with my business partner, Mark Dye, I established White Label Media, which provides copywriting, media training, contract publishing, social media and event moderation services. See www.whitelabel.uk.com for further information.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the titles you write for and their interest in mobile and telecoms:
I serve as editor of VanillaPlus, a bi-monthly magazine that focuses on the enabling technologies that support carrier operations. Key issues at the moment centre on the monetisation of mobile data.

I’m also associate editor of Global Telecoms Business magazine, a title that distributes to CEOs and CFOs of telecoms carriers. The title has a focus, as the title suggests, on the business of telecoms so, from a mobile perspective, a lot of the focus is on understanding the extent to which over the top service providers are an opportunity and a threat.

I also contribute to Wireless magazine as well as a variety of other technology titles.

Q. What’s hot in mobiles this year?

4G, tablet devices, M2M and apps – much like last year.

Industry View from a Mobile Telecoms Veteran: Q&A with Alan Burkitt-Gray, Editor of Global Telecoms Business

January 19, 2011

Alan Burkitt-Gray presenting the GTB Innovation Awards

Q.  Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’ve been a technology and business journalist forever, and editor of Global Telecoms Business for just over 10 years.

Q. Tell us a bit about the titles you write for and their interest in mobile technology.

I’m employed as editor of GTB, so I write just for that. We interview the CEOs and other leading executives of operators worldwide — people such as Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T, who was the cover interview in Nov-Dec 2010, and he spoke about AT&T’s LTE plans in competition with Verizon; or Rob Conway, CEO of the GSM Association, who was the cover interview a year ago, and talked about his expectations for machine-to-machine services.

Q. What’s hot in mobiles this year?

I’ll find out at MWC, though we’re not a consumer magazine — I’m mainly going to talk to network operators.

Q. How many mobile events do you attend each year?

One, MWC; and usually the TM Forum event conference that was in Nice but will be in Dublin, and possibly Broadband World Forum, which is in Paris this year, though the ITU event is back this year, so I’ll probably go to that too. And our own Global Telecoms Business events, though they are different.

Q&A with Teresa Cottam, Research and Publications Director at Telesperience

January 7, 2011

Teresa Cottam shares her views on analyst engagement, industry trends and making the most of MWC 2011.

Q.  Tell us a bit about you:

I’m a gardener – I like to see how the market grows and changes, and I love discovering new technologies or new firms. I’m a market gardener, though – I’m cultivating vegetables, not growing flowers. I’m a practical person and flash new technology doesn’t impress me per se: I always want to know how it solves problems.  I also like to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty by analysing some of the less “sexy” but nevertheless systematic, challenging, endemic or persistent IT and data problems service providers face.
