January 9, 2013

By Rosalind Carr, @Rosalind_at_O

B2B publishers the 2112 Group and Incisive Media formed a recent partnership in a move to extend their  following internationally.

This recent merge will, they hope, establish a combined identity, sparking transatlantic connections and increased readership for 2112 Group’s blog Channelnomics and Incisive Media’s print publication CRN UK and its website, ChannelWeb.co.uk.

CRN explains the goal of this relationship is to “develop media and consultative products that span the transatlantic technology marketplace to support and enable tens of thousands of IT resellers and integrators.”  With this internationally integrated approach in mind, Channelnomics and CRN UK intend to produce joint editorial products in the next year, emphasizing their union through combined editorial objectives. #MWC12 transport chaos ahead? Another update – Maybe not!

February 9, 2012

By Rose Ross, @Rose_at_O

ANOTHER UPDATE: Ah, just when it is all rollerblades, cycling, shoeleather or sharpening of elbows for taxi queues outside the Fira, there is a little light at the end of the travel chaos tunnel.

Phil Rawcliffe, Online Community Manager in the Social Media Team at the GSMA got in touch to clarify that all is not yet lost. He says: ”

The metro and bus workers from TMB, the main public transport operator in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, have announced plans to strike during Mobile World Congress which will be held 27th February through 1st March 2012. Negotiations between the government and the unions are on going in an effort to resolve the issues. While we are hopeful that a strike can be averted prior to the start of Mobile World Congress, the GSMA has developed a comprehensive contingency plan and is ready to activate this plan should it become necessary. For further updates on the strike and if you have any queries, follow @GSMA_Care. Updates will also be posted on www.gsma.comand across our social media channels including Facebook, LinkedIn and Google +.” Thanks for the update Phil. (Phil has kindly agreed to be interviewed for the blog once the MWC stress is over. What a nice chap. Also a very charitable one, who I am about to embarrass a touch as he is running the Barcelona half marathon the DAY BEFORE MWC.He is raising money for the Air Ambulance (A blooming brilliant charity to support) so if everyone donated the quivalent of one nights bar tab for the event I reckon that’s about half a million easy. So hands in your virtual pockets peeps! Click here to give www.justgiving.com/philrawcliffe2012 and best of luck with the half Marathon!

UPDATE: Since we posted this we are sad to report that the strikes have been confirmed. Check out @techcrunch’s @ingridlunden’s post updating us on the strike here.

According to an article in PC Mag rumours are rife that the Spanish transit workers are planning to strike soon and it could directly affect the mobile fun at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in just over 2 weeks.

Sascha Segan (@saschasegan) yesterday reported “transit strike in Barcelona during the world’s largest mobile phone trade show could cause total chaos.

According to Spanish press reports, the union representing workers for the Barcelona metro and bus systems voted today to strike from Feb. 27 to March 1, which would cover the entire period of the 60,000-person trade show. The strike is designed to cause maximum disruption during the trade show period, the Spanish papers say.

On the first day of the show, workers will gather directly in the plaza outside the convention center where the trade show is being held. They reserve the option to call off the strike each day, Barcelona newspaper El Periodico reports.”

The full story on it from Sascha is here.

Other potential reasons for travel issues could be any of the following:

An air traffic control strike in France (none planned as yet but hey you never know)

The volcanic ash cloud. Again no signs of an issue yet but that one came out of nowhere twice in the last few years.

Snow. No I am not joking about that. Last year around this time there was actually snow in Barcelona.

Looks like we’d all better follow the #NOTATMWC stuff on Twitter just in case.

Free tickets to #MWC12 courtesy of @PoyntEurope v/ @MWCFringe

February 8, 2012

Hot on the heels of the post we did earlier today on the newly launched Heroes of the Mobile Fringe. Living on the mobile edge? No that’s where the partying is. More on that here: @technokitten and her lovely community have a competition to win free tickets to MWC12 itself. BUT get a move on as the five lucky winners will be drawn at 6pm GMT this Friday (10th Feb). The full details of the competition are here.

But again remember even if you don’t win and you aren’t in Barcelona, “Heroes of the Mobile Fringe” are also posting all the #NOTATMWC action too!

I guess I’ll need to sort out a #mobilebeers at #RSAC in San Francisco for all us security lovers who can’t be in Barcelona either. I’ll try not to do too much crying into my beer.

#MWC12 update: No more holding out for a hero – The newly launched Mobile Fringe Festival (@mwcfringe) has them aplenty

February 8, 2012

By Rose Ross, AKA Rose_at_O

Helen Keegan aka @Technokitten – founder of #swedishbeers and mobile marketing guruess [Sp.?] [pictured] has just launched a new festival being held in Barcelona from Sunday 26 February to 2 March 2012 alongside the fabulous Mobile World Congress.

It is called Mobile Fringe Festival and you can find out all about the festival here, its sponsors and community partners, how to get involved, the events that are forming part of the festival, our media and community partners and plenty more to keep you busy at Mobile World Congress and the fringe festival. They will also be doing shout-outs for speakers and letting you know how to book for different events and happenings. So make you sure you have it marked as a favourite and follow the fun at @mwcfringe and on its Facebook page http://facebook.com/mwcfringefest.

So when you are packing your suitcase for MWC don’t forget to pack your cape. There’ll be plenty of virtual telephone boxes around for you to transform yourself in.

Here is a small taster of what’s planned;

And there are plenty of ways to get involved – it’s free to add your event, we still need volunteers and we need spaces to host pop-up events too. Don’t be shy. Join in!

But if you are not at MWC, you can still join in the party, not need to be challenged in the fiesta department. There are some #NOTATMWC activities planned in London. More info on that via the Mobile Heroes site here.
